Paintings

I began painting in oils in 2020, when lockdown gave me enough free time to explore painting for myself, and the need to “escape” was as strong as the desire to create. The majority were seascapes based on my past trips to the Hebrides, which I first visited in 2017.

I’ve been back to the islands every year since (except 2020 of course) as I find the light and colours of the land and sea totally addictive. I was lucky to make it to St Kilda in 2019 – an extraordinary experience and well worth the somewhat gruelling voyage out (!) and in 2023, I spent a stunning & unforgettable day on Taransay.

In November 2024 I travelled up the west coast, staying first in Ardnamurchan, then Morar and finally Skye. Looking seaward, I saw the same islands from different aspects and in many different weather conditions – always magnificent. Winter brings short days – but when the sun comes, it lights the landscape dramatically and beautifully.

Closer to home, I also love painting along the East Lothian & Berwickshire coastlines; and in my local wilderness (Holyrood Park). As well as watercolour sketches and photography for reference, I now enjoy plein air painting on small panels with water mixable oils – a great liberation. I then work on larger canvases in my Edinburgh studio.

Past exhibitions include:

“13 Windows” St Margaret’s House – group exhibition (June 2024)

3 Harbour Arts Festival, Port Seton – relaunch event (September 2024)

“Small Worlds/Big Skies”, Coburg House, Leith – joint exhibition with Mary Farrell (April 2025) https://www.coburghouse.co.uk/exhibitions/2025-small-worlds-big-skies
